Every day, millions of people paste sensitive data into AI tools without a second thought. A developer copies proprietary source code into a coding assistant. A lawyer uploads a confidential contract to an AI document analyzer. A marketing team feeds customer personas and competitive intelligence into a content generator. A healthcare worker enters patient notes into an AI scribe.

In each of these cases, the user is making an implicit trust decision. They are assuming that the tool will handle their data responsibly, that it will not use their inputs to train models that serve competitors, that it will not store data longer than necessary, that it has the security infrastructure to prevent breaches. But in most cases, the user has done zero due diligence. The tool looked professional, it worked well, and that was enough.

We built TrustGrade because that is not enough. Not anymore.

The Problem: Trust by Default

The core problem is not that AI tools are inherently untrustworthy. Many are built by reputable companies with genuine commitments to security. The problem is that we have developed a culture of trusting AI tools by default, evaluating them on output quality and speed while ignoring the security and privacy dimensions that determine what happens to our data behind the scenes.

This default trust is understandable. AI tools are extraordinary. They write code that works, produce marketing copy that converts, analyze data in seconds that would take hours manually, and generate designs that used to require a team. The value is so immediate and so visible that it creates a cognitive blind spot around the risks.

But the risks are real, and they are growing as AI adoption accelerates.

The data you share is more sensitive than you think

When you use an AI coding assistant, you are not just sharing a few lines of code. Over time, that tool builds a detailed picture of your entire codebase, your architecture patterns, your API designs, your business logic, your competitive advantages encoded in software. When you use an AI writing tool for work, it sees your internal communications style, your strategic messaging before it is public, your client relationships, your organizational voice.

The cumulative data exposure from regular AI tool usage is far greater than most people realize. It is not one paste. It is hundreds or thousands of interactions, each one adding another piece to a mosaic that could be incredibly valuable to a competitor, damaging in a breach, or problematic under regulatory scrutiny.

Not all tools handle data the same way

There is an enormous range in how AI tools handle the data you give them. Some tools process your input in ephemeral memory and never store it. Others retain it indefinitely. Some explicitly use your data to train and improve their models, meaning your proprietary information could influence outputs shown to other users, including competitors. Some share data with a long list of third-party services for analytics, advertising, and other purposes. Others share nothing.

The difference between these approaches is not visible from the outside. Two AI tools that look identical in their interface and produce comparable outputs may have radically different data handling practices. The only way to know is to investigate, and almost nobody does.

The barrier to entry is zero

Thanks to API access from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, anyone can build an AI tool in a weekend. Wrap an API call in a nice interface, deploy it to the web, and you have a product. The AI part works great because it is powered by a world-class model. But the security part, the SSL configuration, the privacy policy, the data handling, the access controls, those are the builder's responsibility, and many builders skip them entirely.

The result is a market flooded with AI tools that have incredible capabilities and negligible security. Some of these tools become popular, accumulate thousands of users sharing sensitive data, and operate without basic protections like proper encryption, clear privacy policies, or any form of security audit.

The Moment That Crystallized the Problem

The idea for TrustGrade did not come from a single dramatic incident. It came from a pattern we kept seeing: smart, experienced professionals choosing AI tools based entirely on features and recommendations, without any framework for evaluating whether those tools deserved the access they were being given.

We saw a startup CTO paste their entire backend codebase into an AI coding assistant that had no privacy policy. We saw a consultant upload client deliverables to an AI presentation tool that explicitly stated it used all inputs for model training. We saw a healthcare administrator explore AI transcription tools that had no mention of HIPAA anywhere on their site.

In each case, the person was not careless. They simply had no easy way to evaluate the security dimension. There was no Yelp for AI tool security, no Consumer Reports for data privacy, no standardized rating system that could give them a quick, reliable signal about whether a tool was safe for their use case.

That is what TrustGrade is.

TrustGrade is an automated trust assessment platform for AI tools. We scan and evaluate AI tools across four key dimensions: transport security (SSL/TLS), privacy policy quality, security certifications, and technical security hygiene. Each tool receives a numeric trust score from 0 to 100 and a corresponding letter grade from A to F.

The assessments are automated and objective. We do not accept payment from AI tool companies to influence scores. We do not take recommendations from partners. The scanner checks what it checks, the score is what it is, and the grade reflects reality.

Four pillars of assessment

Our methodology evaluates four dimensions, each weighted by its importance to actual data security:

  • SSL/Transport Security (30%): Is the connection between you and the tool encrypted? Is the certificate valid and properly configured? This is the foundation, without it, nothing else matters.
  • Privacy Policy Quality (30%): Does the tool have a privacy policy? Does it address AI-specific concerns like model training, data retention, and third-party sharing? Is it clear and specific, or vague and evasive?
  • Security Certifications (20%): Does the tool hold third-party certifications like SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, or HIPAA? These require independent verification and represent real security investment.
  • Security Headers and Cleanliness (20%): Does the tool implement proper security headers? Is the site free of excessive tracking and third-party scripts? These technical details reveal how seriously the engineering team takes security.

Live data, continuously updated

Security is not static. Certificates expire, privacy policies change, new certifications are earned (or lost), and security configurations evolve. TrustGrade's automated assessments run on a regular cycle, re-scanning tools to keep grades current. What We Believe

TrustGrade is built on a few core beliefs about the relationship between AI tools and the people who use them.

Transparency is a feature, not a cost

We believe that AI tool companies that invest in security and are transparent about their data practices should be rewarded by the market. Today, there is almost no mechanism for this. A tool with excellent security practices looks the same to a prospective user as a tool with terrible practices. TrustGrade changes that equation by making security visible and comparable.

Users deserve easy access to security information

You should not need a security background to evaluate whether an AI tool is safe. The information that matters, encryption status, privacy practices, certifications, technical hygiene, should be available in a format that anyone can understand. That is why we use a simple A-F grading system backed by a detailed score breakdown.

Security should improve through market pressure, not just regulation

Regulation plays an important role, but market pressure can be faster and more adaptive. When users start choosing AI tools partially based on trust grades, tool makers have a direct financial incentive to improve their security practices. When an enterprise procurement team can filter by Grade A tools, the tools that want enterprise customers have a concrete target to aim for. TrustGrade creates this market pressure.
