How to Verify a Vendor's SOC 2 Claim

Not all SOC 2 claims are created equal. Here is a practical process for verifying that a vendor's certification is genuine and relevant.

Request the actual report. A legitimate SOC 2 vendor will share their full report under NDA. If a vendor refuses to share the report or only provides a summary letter, treat that as a significant red flag. The summary letter confirms the audit happened but omits the detail you need to evaluate the vendor's controls.

Check the audit firm. SOC 2 audits must be performed by a licensed CPA firm. Look for well-known firms with established practices in SOC auditing. A report from an unknown or unverifiable firm should be scrutinized more carefully.

  • Scope exclusions. Some vendors achieve SOC 2 for their infrastructure but exclude the specific product features that handle your data. Always verify the scope matches what you are actually using.
  • No mention of exceptions or findings. SOC 2 Type II reports often include exceptions -- instances where controls did not operate as designed. A vendor that claims a perfectly clean report every year may not be providing the complete picture.

SOC 2 in the Context of AI-Specific Risks
